Starting something new

I’m all about new things lately, new blog, new 101 in 1001 and now I’ve got something new to start.

I (along with some ladies from church and my sis and mom) have started a Beth Moore Bible study entitled “A Heart Like His.” I’m pretty excited about this as I’ve done a Beth Moore study before and thought it was a great experience. So last night while playing on her ministry website I found their blog and got to reading (yay another addition to my google reader!). Beth just recently started a memory verse club kind of thing. It’s more of a challenge than a club I suppose, but I decided to join in.

You can find the details of the “club” here. Basically we have been challenged to memorize two verses a month for the year of 2009. The 1st and 15th of each month she’ll make a post and we choose and begin memorizing a new verse. Sounds pretty cool and not too impossible to do. So, I’ve decided I will be keeping track of my progress on this here blog as well (aren’t you excited).

I’m a couple days late getting started in this little game, so I’ve got to get busy. The verse I picked is actually a few verses (nothing like starting off with a challenge). I chose this verse because Sam, my wonderful pastor, spoke about this verse in church yesterday and in my sermon notes, I put a bunch of stars around it and thought it was a really neat verse. So, I give you my verse:

1 Timothy 6:17-19 (NIV)

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

Beautiful isn’t it? I think so. And just to clear things up, this verse is directed at me (or all of us actually), and no, I am not feeling arrogant about my recent raise. We are actually among the richest people in the world  simply because we have things like a bed to sleep in, running water, a roof over our heads, etc.

I think this verse is a good reminder during our current economic times, that our hope and trust needs to be in God, not our finances or the news about Wall Street. We also need to continue to be generous, do good, and share with others, not stingy, hoarding all of our blessings for ourselves. I love the end, “so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” That just excites me, I’m all about life that is truly life, it sounds so blessed and filled with all the goodness that God has to offer. Sign me up!
